Hello Room 17 families,  It has been a fantastic week in our class this week. We have continued to look at place value in math and have been solving problems using our knowledge. In writing we started working on creating paragraphs- we looked at transition words and use them to help us organize example paragraphs as well as create our own.  We spent lots of time talking about truth and reconciliation day coming up tomorrow and orange shirt day. We had an assembly today for orange shirt day and then spent time talking as a class about what we can do to work towards reconciliation and support indigenous peoples who are struggling.  We also started some art based around the indigenous book 'I am not a Fox' by Danielle Daniel, students are picking animals whose indigenous traits they connect with the most and creating a piece of mosaic art using the donated magazines. If you have magazines to donate at home I know they would be helpful in helping to continue working on this art ne

Hello Room 17 families,  This week in math we have been continuing to work on place value. We have been representing numbers in the ten millions using a variety of different techniques.  In writing we have been continuing to work on expanding sentences, as well as looking at fragmented sentences. We have learned that a sentence should have a subject and predicate in order to be considered complete and make sense.  We have been learning about different questions- deep ocean questions and surface level puddle questions. We learned about Terry Fox and worked to ask different types of questions about his life that would spark discussion and make us think deeply. We also learned an ombre painting technique and made our own bookmarks. I am hoping to create a torn art piece this upcoming week and am looking for magazine donations. If you have any old magazines that you are willing to part with, if you could please send them in early in the week that would be fantastic.  Thank you and have a g

Friday September 16th

Happy Weekend Room 17! This week in math we have begun looking at place value. We revised the various ways we know to show numbers and are beginning to work towards representing numbers to ten million.  In Language Arts we have been working on expanding sentences. We have been looking at boring simple sentences and working to make them more interesting by adding more 'vibrant verbs', 'specific nouns' and amazing adjectives, as well as ensuring that we are telling the 'when?' 'where?' and 'why' to add more details. Today we worked with our table group to create some amazing sentences by each adding an element to each others' simple sentences.  Our class has been sharing unique artifacts we brought from home and working to ask the sharer deep questions to help us to learn about the artifact that they have brought.  Finally we have been learning about Responsible Work Choice and the various materials we have around the room we can use to learn

Friday September 9

Hello Room 17 families,  This week we have begun preparing for LBS open house night which is coming up in a. couple of weeks. We have been working on some self portraits to welcome you when you come to visit our classroom. We have also been working on some math that introduce different numbers that make up parts of ourselves.  In language arts we have been working on asking good questions, Miss Adamson brought in a personal artifact to show us but didn't tell us much about it and we had to ask deep questions that would help us to understand why it was important to her. We have also been doing some sketchnoting about our summer, using pictures and words to share about what we did over the break.  We created nature placemats to use during our snack and lunch time, working on our artistic as well as practical life skills reflective of a Montessori Learner.  We also have met our new buddy class- Mrs. Gierl's Gr. 1/2 class! We helped them to go on a nature walk to gather supplies a

First couple days of school

Hello room 17 families,  The first couple of days of school have flown by quickly! We have spent the past couple of days getting to know each other through games and activities, as well as getting back into the groove of how to be in the classroom. I hope all the kiddos have lots to tell you about new friends they've been making or old ones with whom they've been reunited.  In the spirit of Montessori, next week we are hoping to make some placemats for us to use in the classroom to make our snack and lunchtimes intentional and practice our practical life skills. We are hoping to do a nature themed art, so we are asking that while you are out enjoying the summer weather you might gather interesting leaves, grass, or flowers you might see.  If any families have a garden from which they would be willing to donate any flowers or flower petals, that might be on their way out and we could press that would be fantastic.  Have a fantastic long weekend and we will see you on Tuesday!
