 Hello Room 17 families,  This week we have been working on word problems involving patterning. Students have been discussing and using different strategies in order to solve a variety of problems. In language arts, we have been looking at letter writing. We have been distinguishing the different features and uses of letters, looking particularly at formal vs. informal letters. We also went on a walking field trip each day. We are working on building our walking stamina, as well as learning various journaling techniques. This is helping to prepare us for our week long field trip to City Hall school coming up in a couple of weeks, where we will be walking around downtown and journaling to share our ideas and learning.  In social studies we have been learning about the 4 pillars of democracy: equity, freedom, justice, and representation. Book Fair- March 6-13

  Dear families,     Mark your calendars! The fun and excitement of a Scholastic Book Fair is coming to our school again during Student Led Conferences! To adapt to our changing needs, Scholastic has developed a   Hybrid Book Fair (in-school with a virtual link)   to provide an opportunity for our students and families to experience the joy of reading together.     So, save the date! Our   Scholastic Virtual Book Fair   will take place on:    Monday, March 6 th till Monday, March 13 th        When it’s time to shop, you can choose to visit the virtual link and purchase online or in person during Student-Led Conferences.   More information to come!         Happy reading!

March 9

This week in math we have been working on Order of Operations; using BEDMAS to help us remember the order we need to complete each mathematical operation. Grade 5s have been learning how brackets affect the equations, grade 6s have been working with exponents, along with some grade 5s who wanted a challenge. In writing, we have been writing biographies of historical Canadian figures. Students have been completing research on their chosen individual, taking jot notes, and then drafting their biographies. Students have been self-editing, peer editing and receiving teacher feedback to support them in working through their writing.  In social studies, Grade 6s have been working on reading provided texts to answering questions on Ancient Athens; Grade 5s have been completing research and creating presentations on regions within Canada.  In science, Grade 6s have been learning about sky science, learning about reflecting vs emitting light.
