School Reminders

Halloween Oct 31 / Nov 1st Halloween is Monday, October 31 st . Students are invited to wear Halloween costumes if they would like. We remind all students that there is no gore, no masks and no weapons.  Students should come with their costumes on. Please ensure that costumes are comfortable to be worn throughout the day and will be safe and suitable for all daily activities such as gym, recess and learning time. Inflatable costumes are challenging for students to work in throughout the day.  In keeping with nutrition and health protocols, we ask for no additional treats or snacks to be sent in.     The parade is BACK!  We are so happy to welcome families back to the school for our Halloween parade. The gym will be set up for costume viewing. Our parade will start at 1:00 and students will wander through the gym to showcase their costumes. If you would like to join us, please come to the front door and join us in the gym for 1:00.  Please connect with your child’s teacher if you do not

Hello Room 17 families,  This week we have been working on word problems involving patterning. Students have been discussing and using different strategies in order to solve a variety of problems. In language arts, we have been looking at letter writing. We have been distinguishing the different features and uses of letters, looking particularly at formal vs. informal letters. We also went on a walking field trip each day. We are working on building our walking stamina, as well as learning various journaling techniques. This is helping to prepare us for our week long field trip to City Hall school coming up in a couple of weeks, where we will be walking around downtown and journaling to share our ideas and learning.  In social studies we have been learning about the 4 pillars of democracy: equity, freedom, justice, and representation. We have also been looking at the different levels of government. We looked around our community for evidence of government services, and then created a

Please make sure students are arriving at school dressed for the weather as we will be going, rain or shine. * Hello Room 17 families,  In math we have been learning about input and output tables, figure patterns, and creating pattern rules, including using algebraic expressions In science, we have been doing a lot with our fingerprints. We took our fingerprints and stamped them on to a balloon to blow up, to see what type it was and what 'fingerprint characteristics' we could find. Ask your child what are the different types of fingerprints.  We did our good copy art for the Art Card fundraiser. We taught our buddies about creating shades, they did shades of blue, we did shades of red.  In writing this week we wrote a letter to Miss Adamson. We have been practicing writing paragraphs and used that to help us in our first stint in letter writing. This week we learned about character pers

Hello room 17 families,  This week in math we began learning about patterns. Ask your child what 2 types of patterns we learned about this week and how to figure out the pattern rules.  We started science today looking at 'Evidence and Investigation'. Students used their detective skills to try and remember all the facts they could about a student who had been asked to leave the classroom, we discussed the difference between facts and opinions and why facts are important to this unit.  In writing we worked on our paragraph writing skills by answering different 'Would you Rather' questions, and providing 3 details that supported our answers. We have also been reading the book 'Restart' and working on picking out words we don't know and looking them up with computers or dictionaries to help us understand what we are reading.  In social studies we have been learning about government. We have learned that our government is a democracy and that we have a voice i

Hello Room 17 families,  This week we have been wrapping up representing numbers and have been working on showing Miss Adamson what we learned in the past few weeks. We will be moving on to new areas in math where we can apply what we learned to new concepts.  We have been working on Questioning and Vocabulary during our read aloud time. We have been applying our understanding of different types of questions to our read aloud, asking questions before, during and after reading. We also have been learning about how to pull new vocabulary from the text as a class and using technology and dictionaries to look up their meaning. We talked about using the context of the sentence to help us pick the definition that fits best. We will continue to build this understanding together, and independently. In social studies we have begun talking about government. We have been discussing why we have rules, the different types of rules we have in the various spaces we occupy, and their impact on our so
