 In math we did: adding and subtracting fractions. gr. 6 did it with uncommon denomanators. in L.A we did: we wrote alliteration, acrostic and cincquian poetry. in science we did: Gr 6's did trees and forest research and the Gr.5's did wetlands research. in social we did: Gr.5's reasearched the indegenous people of canada Gr. 6's learned about iroquois people and the roles of women and athens and the people of the iroquois. we made fathers day cards. we also had...  SPORTS DAY!!!!!!! we spent an hour and a half doing activities that the teachers set up. (we were the backstreet bingus) and then we did a teachers vs Gr.6 kickball game in which the teachers won.

 We had a lot of work this week - in science we did: Gr 6's did loads of work finishing up their trees and forests we also wrapped up our air and aerodynamics. Gr 5's did a lot of research on wetlands, they had to study one and then make a slideshow or a poster about one type of wetland. In math, we had an assesment on adding and subtracting fractions. In social the gr 6's did a lot of work on the iroquois confediracy

 Hello room 17 families! We have had a busy couple of weeks! The students had an amazing week last week at outdoor school. We had a great time exploring the forest, learning skills such as fire and shelter building, engaging in games around economics and the food chain, participating in cooperative challenges and creative tasks. It was an wonderful week of learning and fun! This week, we wrapped up our 'Student Vote'. Students worked in groups to research the different parties, their leader, and the local candidate. We engaged in discussions, watched debates, and heard party leaders answer questions posed by students. Finally students were able to vote on the candidate they felt alligned most with their 'political views'.  In Science, we continued learning about Trees and Forests, spending lots of time looking at trees and leaves, sketching them, labelling the different parts and classifying them based on learned characteristics.  Hello Room 17 families, I hope you have been hearing lots about our amazing trip to outdoor school last week and the great time our students had learning outdoors. Here are a few school updates: If you have been a volunteer within any of the Lake Bonavista classrooms this year.... YOU'RE INVITED!  Phys Ed Infromation: Lake Bonavista School is participating in rugby from June 5 th until June 8 th in our school field. This sport involves foundational movement skills such as jumping, running, throwing, and catching. The goal of this experience is to learn the skills of rugby and will not involve any bodily contact.      Rugby Alberta has generously agreed to provide this residency free of charge.  Consent forms will be sent home with your child soon.  Please sign and return the forms so your child is able to participate in this fun LBS event! Lake Bonavista School is participating in netball from May 8 th until May 16 th in our gymnasium. This sport involves foundational movement skills such as jumping, running, throwing, and catching. As described on the Netball Alberta website ( www. netball alberta.com ): “ Netball is an exciting, fast and skillful game of fair contest: It is a game in which two teams of seven players each strive to keep or gain possession of the ball.  Hello room 17 families,  This week in math we have been learning about factors and multiples, and prime and composite numbers. Today we played the math game 'SALUTE' to practice our skills.  In writing, we have been creating non-fiction writing. Grade 5s did a mini research project on a chosen type of precipitation to connect with weather; Grade 6s did a mini research project on a chosen constellation to connect with sky science. They created plans to answer questions and then wrote out paragraphs. They also included non-fiction text features such as labelled diagrams, maps and glossaries to make their writing more interesting and easily understood.  In social studies, students have been learning about each person's biography subject. Grade 6s have also begun learning about the Iroquois, or Haudenosaunee peoples. 

We will begin gymnastics in our regularly scheduled gym classes on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays.  The gymnastics unit will last five weeks.  Safety routines, cooperation and sportsmanship are taught and reviewed in each class.       This physical activity opportunity will help students acquire individual skills through a variety of developmentally appropriate movement activities.     It is important for students to come to school prepared to be actively engaged. Hello room 17,  This week in math we started working on coordinate graphing, we made double line and double bar graphs to represent weather data we had collected for science/social studies, and we have started doing algebra on Fridays for  a fun challenge.  In social studies, Grade 5s made a brochure advertising our regions that we learned about, their audience sketch-noted what they learned about each region. Grade 6s made an informational brochure to teach about ancient Athens. Grade 5s and 6s also presented in small groups about what they had been learning.  In science,  grade 5's used thermometers outside and inside, learning about how air moves in different spaces and what factors can affect the temperature of an area. We learned about cold fronts and warm fronts and how it affects the movement of cold and warm air. This week in math we have been working on Order of Operations; using BEDMAS to help us remember the order we need to complete each mathematical operation. Grade 5s have been learning how brackets affect the equations, grade 6s have been working with exponents, along with some grade 5s who wanted a challenge. In writing, we have been writing biographies of historical Canadian figures. Students have been completing research on their chosen individual, taking jot notes, and then drafting their biographies. Students have been self-editing, peer editing and receiving teacher feedback to support them in working through their writing.  In social studies, Grade 6s have been working on reading provided texts to answering questions on Ancient Athens; Grade 5s have been completing research and creating presentations on regions within Canada.  In science, Grade 6s have been learning about sky science, learning about reflecting vs emitting light.  Blog by Mia  :)       In music class, we started recorders!      We went to the Saddledome for pink shirt day. We watched the Hitman vs the Ice.     In math we started BEDMAS, otherwise known as Order of Operations. We finished division and multiplication.  Miss Adamson has posted optional homework on the google classroom for those who want to do some extra practice over the weekend.     In social studies, we did a map challenge to answer questions. Grade 5 did the Canada map and the Grade 6 did the Athens, or more known as ancient Greece.           We started writing biographies. The Grade 5 wrote about famous Canadian people. The Grade 6 wrote about the black Canadians. That's all for this week! :) -Mia

  On T hursday, March 2nd, there will be a Camp Chief Hector - Outdoor School presentation for parents.  Attendance from at least one parent or guardian is mandatory.  The presentation will be held in the school gym beginning at   5:30pm .  This presentation will provide information about activities, schedules, meals, sleeping arrangements, payment, etc., and will be an opportunity to ask any questions that you may have.

  Dear families,     Mark your calendars! The fun and excitement of a Scholastic Book Fair is coming to our school again during Student Led Conferences! To adapt to our changing needs, Scholastic has developed a   Hybrid Book Fair (in-school with a virtual link)   to provide an opportunity for our students and families to experience the joy of reading together.     So, save the date!  We have been preparing our presentations this week to share about our learning around our inquiry: Old Enough to Make a Change. Thank you so much for all the support from home in helping your child to share their learning. They did an amazing job presenting to all of the students today, sharing all their learning and taking ownership of the work that they were presenting. Thank you so much to those parents who were also able to make it out. Here are just a few pictures of our presentations today.   

 Blog by Rhea In math, we wrapped up single divisor long division, and started double divisor long division. We also learned about check methods, using mutiplication to check that we got the answer correct In writing, we started writing biographies about child activists. We read about 11 different activists in the book 'Old Enough to Save the Planet', then we got into groups and we picked one of the 11 people to learn more about and write about. In art, we had a guest teacher, Ms. Sharon! we painted on wooden planks, about water in the air, land, and underground. These are going to go into our garden as public art. This connects to our science learning we did about the water cycle.  In health, we learned about the 7 sacred teachings. They are Courage, Wisdom, Love, Humility, Honesty, Respect and Truth. We each learned about one of them and then we shared all the information we had learned with a group to teach each other about all 7.     That's all!
